Mindfulness in the Kitchen

Amnon (Allan) Medad

100% of book proceeds support GROW Community Food Literacy Centre

Amnon guides readers through simple strategies that can be used to make delicious and healthy meals at home. By mindfully combining fresh produce, simple set-asides, and using a little creativity, Amnon argues that any meal can be turned into an occasion.

Described 30 years ago (Toronto Star, March 30, 1994) as “philosopher and bon-vivant,” Amnon has engaged—physically and intellectually—with all aspects of food and its consumption, with devotion and reverence more typically associated with religious observance.

An entrepreneur and self-employed consultant with considerable discretionary time at his disposal, Amnon has, since the early 80s, spent a significant part of it in food-centric research, travel experiences, and experimentation. He has cooked, and occasionally catered, in places as diverse as Italy, Mexico, Spain, and Belize, always using farm-fresh (or local market) ingredients. In Caledon or Toronto, Amnon has relied almost exclusively on his gardens, using preservation strategies described in the book.

We acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties, and is within the lands protected by the “Dish With One Spoon” wampum agreement. With our Indigenous Outreach Coordinator, we are working closely with our Indigenous community to advocate for a just food system, and to create community food programs that are culturally relevant, diverse, equitable and inclusive.
