Community Service Worker - GROW Market Assistant

Market Assistant Overview: 

The GROW Market Assistant is an 8-week, full-time (35-hours per week) contract position based at the GROW Community Food Literacy Centre, reporting to the Program Manager. This role is pivotal in delivering our "GROW-on-the-GO" Mobile Market and low-cost market programs. We are seeking a compassionate, resourceful candidate to support our mission to mitigate food insecurity and promote food literacy. 

 

Hours: 35 hours per week, for 8-weeks

Pay Rate: $17.60 hourly

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Facilitate equitable food access by assisting in the daily operations of the GROW Market and Mobile Market. 

  • Engage with diverse program participants using a trauma-informed, inclusive, and culturally competent approach. 

  • Process transactions (cash/non-cash) and manage inventory data to ensure accurate reporting on community needs. 

  • Maintain high standards of hygiene and organization within the market and mobile truck to ensure a dignified shopping experience. 

  • Assist leadership in identifying opportunities to streamline processes and better serve marginalized community members. 

  • Support community outreach strategies to increase engagement among target demographics. 

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a passion for social justice, equity, and food security. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, understanding the intersectionality of poverty and food access. Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving capabilities. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Physical ability to lift 40 lbs+ and assist with market set-up.

Kitchen Helper - GROW Assistant Cook

Assistant Cook Overview: The Assistant Cook is an 8-week, full-time (35-hours per week) contract position based at the GROW Community Food Literacy Centre, reporting to the Program Manager. This role is designed to provide the youth participant with hands-on culinary skills while deepening their understanding of food literacy as a tool for social change. The candidate will assist in preparing dignified, nutritious meals for community members, many of whom face systemic barriers to food access, specifically vulnerable populations and single-parent households. This position goes beyond simple food preparation; it is an opportunity to actively challenge systemic inequalities. The role allows the applicant to understand and amplify the experiences of marginalized groups (including BIPOC and persons with disabilities) while exploring the intersection of sociocultural factors and food literacies. This ensures the placement is not just labour, but

a transformative educational experience. 

 

Hours: 35 hours per week, for 8-weeks

Pay Rate: $17.60 hourly

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the preparation and service of nutritious meals, adhering to strict food safety and nutritional guidelines. 

  • Support the delivery of food literacy programming aimed at empowering community members with culinary skills, baking techniques. Maintain a professional, sanitary, and welcoming kitchen environment. 

  • Participate in food rescue and sorting operations to minimize waste and maximize community benefit. 

  • Engage with volunteers and community members to foster a supportive and inclusive kitchen atmosphere. 

 

Preferred Skills: 

  • Interest in culinary arts, nutrition, or community food systems. 

  • Understanding of the social and cultural contexts of program users (including BIPOC and single-parent families). 

  • Experience in a commercial kitchen/bakery is an asset. 

  • Valid Safe Food Handler’s Certificate (or willingness to obtain). 

  • Ability to work efficiently in a team environment. 

  • Physical ability to lift 40 lbs+.
